...ive musicians from the Los Angeles indie, jazz, and experimental music scenes. Their 2024 debut, Small Medium Large, was based on recordings edited down from lengthy improvisation sessions held at the now-shuttered venue ETA, stylistically recalling Krautrock and Afrobeat as well as post-punk and ambient techno. The more self-aware, collectivist How You Been followed in 2025. Bassist Anna Butterss, synthesizer artist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, drummer/percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann make up the group SML. Butterss and Johnson played in a quartet with guitarist Jeff Parker, frequently performing at the Los Angeles venue ETA. The five musicians performed several improvisatory shows at ETA, which were recorded in stereo by Bryce Gonzales, then edited and mixed using additional home recordings by the musicians. The result, Small Medium Large, was released by International Anthem in 2024. The group honed their chemistry through live performances, and their second album, How You Been, appeared in 2025. ~ Paul Simpson
